	作曲者はキャリー・モーガン (Carey Morgan)とリー・デイヴィド (Lee David)で、英語の歌詞には幾つかバリエーションがあり、作者不詳となっています。
	英語の歌詞では、同じフレーズを２回、コール＆レスポンスのような形でメロディを繰り返す構成になっています。この歌のように、歌詞の一部を別の人が、やまびこのように繰り返して歌うような歌をエコーソング、追いかけ歌と言います。このような曲には他にアメリカ民謡の「ダウンバイザベイ」や童謡の「アイアイ」などがあります。
	日本では童謡として知られていますが、もともとは米国のボーイスカウトなどの野外活動のときに歌う歌だったようです。
